Sustainable leather

Sustainable leather - is that even possible?

If you still have vivid memories of your dad's or granddad's school bag, then you know the sentimental and material value of a product made from sustainable leather. Although the item is getting on in years, it may still be in good condition. Perhaps you still own it or maybe you sold it at a flea market.
In your grandfather's day, most leathers were still tanned in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Unfortunately, this has changed fundamentally. The reason is time. And time is money, as the saying goes. Where sustainable tanning (vegetable tanning or also called vegetable tanning) often takes weeks, chemical tanning often only takes days or even hours. The supposed advantage that the leather can be made durable quickly has several disadvantages. Chrome-tanned leathers are very harmful to the environment. It is not uncommon for the tanning liquids to be discharged unfiltered into rivers. The tanners, often very poor workers, stand unprotected and barefoot in the chemical tanning liquid and pound the leather to make it supple. If chrome tanning is used incorrectly, it can even produce chromium IV, which has been proven to be carcinogenic.

You will never get leather products made from sustainable leather at a bargain price. Handcrafted leather simply takes more time and is therefore always more expensive. You don't need to be a leather expert. Just pick up a vegetable-tanned leather and smell it. You will immediately notice the difference and never want to buy any other leather again.

The question of organic leather quickly arises. Yes, there is organic leather and even Demeter leather, but these stocks and herds are so small that they cannot supply the market.

Wouldn't it be nice if one day your grandchild held your wallet in their hands and you passed on a piece of sustainable leather full of stories from your life?

You can think about the future as soon as you make your purchase and see people lovingly holding pieces of leather from your heritage in their hands.
You will find a large selection of products made from sustainable leather in our online store. Take a look at our bestsellers, perhaps one or two pieces of jewelry will suit your taste.

Vegetable tanning was the only tanning method for a long time. There is evidence that vegetable tanning was discovered over 5000 years ago. Today, the proportion of vegetable tanning in leather production is only around 10%.

Nordic cattle for southern, sustainable leather

Sustainability starts with animal husbandry. The welfare of the animals is the top priority here. If the farmers treat the lives of farm animals with care, you get high-quality meat and, of course, sustainable leather. All our leathers come from Northern Europe, as this is where the animals are kept best.
Fine vachetta leather is tanned in Italy and processed by hand in Germany into high-quality leather products. Of course, it can also happen that your leather product has a characteristic grain. Because one thing should be clear to all of us. Cattle and cows are out in the pasture, not lying in bed. :-)

Sustainable leather is and remains a natural material that is durable and robust if cared for properly. Vegetable tanning in particular, which is more environmentally friendly for water than chrome tanning with salts, creates a sustainable leather product. Only around 10% of manufacturers pay attention to the sustainable processing of leather. In southern countries, especially Italy, you can still discover traditional tanneries whose owners have centuries of knowledge, which the tanners apply to the processing of sustainable leather. In tanning pits, the cattle hides are tanned for up to sixty days in a lye made from plant broth, for example oak and spruce bark, olive leaves or rhubarb roots, in order to preserve them sustainably

Tradition for modern design with sustainable leather

All our products use this ecological leather. Our leather looks particularly elegant on the iPad Pro or Macbook Pro sleeve FRIEDRICH. Here we use a so-called full-grain leather, which is "milled" softly for hours. Our KARL desk pad also has a great appearance. Here, for example, we use very firm leather, as this is what a desk pad should have. Our sustainable leather is pleasant to the touch and flatters your hands. Take our products in your hand. You will be impressed.

The sustainability of leather is characterized in particular by good workmanship and high quality. Leather must meet your requirements and the intended use. It can be soft and supple for you or sturdy and firm.

Sustainable leather is often used in orthopaedics because it moulds to your joints through body heat. Leather can therefore be used sustainably in medicine. You should also always make sure that soles are sustainably and vegetable tanned. Walking barefoot on chrome-tanned leather? For a whole summer? An absolute no-go and not recommended.

From nature into the hand

Leather products made with great care and craftsmanship are held in particularly high regard. You can literally smell the nature that goes into items made from sustainable leather. You can feel how valuable your key bag feels in everyday use.

Unfortunately, chrome-tanned leather pollutes rivers and lakes in poorer countries. In addition, chemical compounds can cause allergies and reddening of the skin in some people.

Basically, it is better to choose quality over quantity and sustainable leather will give you pleasure for a long time. All too often, damaged products made quickly end up in the garbage can after a short time. A leather desk mat protects your wooden or glass furniture from scratches. Sustainable leather also enhances a simple living ambience. If you're more of an organized person, you'll love the cable organizer made from sustainable leather. The loops replace conventional plastic clips and bring order to the cable clutter that tends to develop with daily use. Your notepads, pens and office utensils will find a useful place in a stylish leather case.

Cleaning and care of sustainable leather

Soiling that quickly occurs in everyday life can be easily removed with a damp cloth. Vegetable-tanned leather is not particularly demanding. Any scratches that may occur quickly can usually be removed with a damp cloth. Every now and then you can do something good for your leather product and rub it with a leather cream. This will prevent it from becoming brittle and will actually last a lifetime. If your product becomes more dirty, you can easily remove this dirt with a special leather cleaner. A foam surrounds the dirt particles on the durable leather and removes them when wiped off. Apply the product with a soft sponge and then remove any residue with a soft cloth.

Sustainable leather is a natural product and your regular care will keep it supple. If you treat it with a universal colorless leather cream, it will not become brittle.

In the case of stains caused by liquids, experts advise dabbing the stain dry with a cloth. High-quality care components are suitable for refreshing and intensifying colors.
